You land in Paris needing a map, a ride and a message home before you need a single video. That is where a useful travel-SIM comparison starts: does your phone support eSIM, is the plan data-only and can you share the connection? Look beyond a large gigabyte number to the details that separate a France plan, a Europe package and roaming on your usual line.
Start with how you travel
| Option | Useful for | Check first |
|---|---|---|
| Travel eSIM | A compatible phone and advance setup | Unlocked handset, coverage, validity start and data versus calls |
| Physical SIM | No eSIM support or a preference for a removable card | Correct format and safe storage of the home SIM |
| Home-network roaming | An existing travel bundle that suits the trip | France rates and data or calling limits |
| Orange Holiday / Orange Travel | Comparing a family of European travel plans | Each tier has its own allowance, duration and contents |
| Bouygues My European SIM | Comparing another tourist offer | Current price, countries and plan conditions |
Check the handset before buying
Confirm eSIM support for your exact handset variant and ensure it is not network-locked against another operator. Dual-SIM capability on one model version does not prove identical features across all variants. If using two lines, decide which handles data and which remains for messages.
Keep access to the purchase email and installation instructions before departure. Airport Wi-Fi should not be the only way to retrieve the code needed to install the connection you have already bought.
Orange: one name, different plans
When reviewed, Orange Holiday’s page showed examples including 1GB for seven days and 20GB for 31 days, with different calling contents between tiers. They are not simply the same product with a larger allowance; physical-SIM and eSIM availability also varies.
Use the exact Orange Travel offer you will pay for. Do not generalise a price or duration from an older FAQ to every plan. Orange says Holiday supports tethering, while the chosen offer remains the reference for its conditions.

Bouygues and home roaming: compare like with like
Bouygues’ My European SIM is another tourist product to compare. Look at the final price, validity, countries and calls rather than gigabytes alone. A number-and-calls plan differs from data-only service when you need to telephone a hotel or restaurant.
EU roaming rules do not automatically make a Gulf or other non-EU home SIM free to use in France. Those rules concern services within their applicable scope; your home operator’s travel plan determines the charges on that line.
Three kinds of trip
For a short visit built around maps and messaging, start with validity covering the whole stay and an allowance consistent with your normal use. Remote work or family tethering makes hotspot conditions, speed limits and fair-use policies more relevant than the word unlimited.
For France–Italy–Switzerland or a visit to Monaco, read the actual country list. Geographical Europe, the EU and an operator’s coverage region are not identical. A plan that fits Paris can have different conditions at the next stop.
Activate without confusing the two lines
After installation, assign the travel line to mobile data using the handset and provider instructions. Some travel eSIMs require data roaming on their own line; that does not mean switching roaming on for the home SIM. Name the lines clearly.
Download your neighbourhood map, hotel details and important tickets before going out. That remains useful backup even with a good plan; no service guarantees a signal in every tunnel, basement or crowded place.
Compare the real price
Put four figures together: total payment, days of validity, data allowance and included calls. Add top-up and hotspot requirements if relevant. Offers change, so use the current checkout rather than a circulating old screenshot.
A family member without eSIM support may prefer a physical SIM or shared connectivity where suitable. Do not automatically buy a plan for everyone, but do not rely on one phone if the group will separate during the day.
Useful questions
Does an eSIM necessarily include a calling number?
No. Some products are data-only; others include calls and a number. Read the individual plan.
Do EU rules give my Gulf SIM free roaming?
Do not assume so. Your home operator’s package determines charges on that line.
Can I share the connection?
Orange Holiday says tethering is supported. Check the relevant condition on other offers.
