Start with the claim, then find the standard
Words such as eco-friendly, conscious, local and green have no fixed meaning on a booking page. Ask what sits behind them. Is there a named label? Who owns it? Which criteria apply to accommodation? Credible hotels can explain what they measure. A historic Paris building may face different technical constraints from a new property, so improvement trajectory and transparent boundaries matter.
On waste, look beyond eliminating small plastic bottles. Ask about food-waste measurement, refill systems, sorting behind the scenes, hazardous waste, furniture reuse and supplier packaging.
