Julien Dassin was only five months old when his father died. He inherited almost no personal memories of Joe Dassin—but the world handed him millions of its own: songs recognised from their first bars, a voice tied to romance, travel, the Champs-Élysées and the “Indian summer.” In Cairo, the son will step onto the Main Hall stage with a difficult question inside every song: how do you carry the legacy of a man you barely had time to know?
On 6 November, Julien Dassin and his musicians bring Joe Dassin Story to the Cairo Opera House. This is more than a French nostalgia concert. It is the latest chapter in a creative family stretching from filmmaker Jules Dassin to his son Joe and then to Julien, who chose to return the repertoire to live stages instead of leaving it inside an archive.

A son who inherited the songs before the memories
Julien was born in 1980; Joe Dassin died suddenly that August. The father left an enormous public image, but fame cannot replace a private presence. Julien grew up facing a parent whom audiences seemed to know better than he did—through records, archive film and other people’s stories.
That is why his concerts occupy a different emotional space from conventional tribute shows. He is not approaching Joe Dassin as an outside impersonator. The repertoire is simultaneously public memory and a family file. His 2025 book about his father extended that project from performance into biography, searching for the person behind the immaculate stage image.
From Jules to Joe to Julien
Julien is the grandson of filmmaker Jules Dassin and the son of French-American chanson star Joe Dassin. He began as an actor, recorded a project around Yves Montand and gradually made his father’s repertoire central to his touring life.
According to his official website, Joe Dassin Story has travelled through more than 25 countries. French musicians join him in a production combining live performance, archive material and songs that have outlived the decade in which they were written.

Why Cairo suits this story
Cairo Opera House has its own narrative of loss and renewal. The nineteenth-century Khedivial Opera House burned in 1971; the present National Cultural Centre opened on Gezira in 1988. Like the concert, the venue embodies an idea: memory cannot return in exactly the same form, but it can find another stage.
The Opera’s official description places the Main Hall at more than a thousand seats, with multiple levels and an orchestra area designed for major productions. Joe Dassin Story is therefore arriving at one of the region’s most important music stages, not an anonymous touring room.
What might the audience hear?
No final Cairo setlist has been published, so circulating lists should not be presented as confirmed. The show is built around Joe Dassin’s best-known repertoire, which includes songs associated worldwide with his name such as Les Champs-Élysées, L’Été indien, Et si tu n’existais pas and Dans les yeux d’Émilie. The real surprise will be their order and live arrangement.

Tribute—or a second life for the songs?
Some spectators will arrive looking for Joe Dassin and find his son standing in front of them. That is precisely the story’s force. Julien cannot bring his father back and does not need to pretend otherwise. He can give the songs a present body, a new voice and a human proximity no impersonation could supply.
When the lights fall and the first introduction begins, the most interesting question will not be who resembles whom. It will be how a song born in another era travelled from Paris to Cairo—and from an absent father to a son facing a new audience.
