Mexico travel alert · Updated 16 October 2026

Hurricane Trudy strengthened into a major Category 3 storm over the eastern Pacific on Friday, with the center south-west of Acapulco and moving toward Mexico’s south-western and west-central coast. Travelers with plans involving Guerrero, Michoacán, Colima, Jalisco or nearby Pacific resorts should treat this as a live weather event, not a fixed forecast.

Where Trudy is heading

The U.S. National Hurricane Center placed Trudy roughly 250 miles south-west of Acapulco early Friday. The system was moving north-west and was expected to approach the south-western and west-central coast during the weekend. A hurricane warning covered the coastline from Cabo Corrientes to Punta San Telmo, while a tropical-storm warning extended from Zihuatanejo to Manzanillo. Forecast tracks can shift, and damaging weather can occur far outside the center line.

Which trips are most exposed

Beach stays, road transfers and flights serving the Pacific coast deserve immediate review. Acapulco may experience rough seas and heavy rain even if the storm center remains offshore. Manzanillo, coastal Colima and Jalisco face a more direct risk as Trudy moves north-west. Travelers inland should also watch for flooding, landslides and road closures because tropical rainfall can disrupt routes well away from the shoreline.

What to do before leaving

Do not travel toward a warned coastal area without checking the latest municipal and state instructions. Verify the operating airline rather than relying on an old booking screen, and ask the hotel whether it is accepting arrivals and what shelter or evacuation procedures apply. Download tickets, insurance documents and identification for offline access. Keep medicines, a power bank and essential items in hand luggage.

Flights, hotels and insurance

A weather warning does not automatically cancel every flight or hotel booking. Each supplier decides its operation, and insurance coverage depends on when the policy and trip were purchased. Ask for written confirmation of any cancellation, waiver or rebooking offer before buying a replacement. If an authority issues an evacuation order, follow it immediately and document reasonable additional expenses.

The next update matters more than the previous one

Trudy intensified rapidly and may strengthen further before weakening later in the weekend. That makes old screenshots and social posts particularly unreliable. Use the National Hurricane Center, Mexico’s civil-protection authorities, the airline and the accommodation provider as separate checks. A confirmed flight does not prove that the road to the hotel is open.

Quick answers

Is Acapulco closed to tourists?

There is no single universal closure in the advisory. Travelers must check local authorities, their airline and accommodation.

Should I cancel a weekend trip to Mexico?

Mexico is large. The decision depends on the exact Pacific-coast destination, route, official warnings and supplier policies.

Can the forecast still change?

Yes. Track, intensity and warning zones can change with every advisory.

What to do now

Send this alert to anyone traveling to Mexico’s Pacific coast this weekend. The most useful detail is the exact destination—not simply the word “Mexico”.

Official and primary sources

Operational information can change quickly. Recheck the official source, airline and local authorities before departure.
