France road alert · Updated 16 October 2026
France’s Bison Futé traffic service classifies Friday, 16 October, as orange nationwide for departures as the school holidays begin in France and parts of neighboring countries. The heaviest pressure is expected from mid-afternoon into the evening, especially around Île-de-France, the northern borders, Brittany and the Mediterranean corridor.
Leaving Île-de-France
Bison Futé advises drivers to leave or cross Île-de-France before 15:00 or after 22:00 on Friday. Traffic is expected to build on the A6 and A10 as holiday departures combine with commuter and weekend flows. On Saturday, leave before 08:00 or after 15:00 to avoid the strongest outbound pressure.
Roads to avoid on Friday
The official forecast recommends avoiding the A16 between Amiens and Belgium from 11:00 to 17:00, the A25 from Lille to Dunkirk between 13:00 and 18:00, the N12 between Rennes and Brest from 18:00 to 20:00, and the N165 from Nantes to Quimper over the same period. The A7 between Orange and Marseille is expected to be difficult from 16:00 to 20:00, while the A64 between Toulouse and Pau is best avoided from 17:00 to 19:00.
Mont Blanc and return traffic
The Mont Blanc Tunnel may be particularly slow from 14:00 until midnight. In the return direction, Bison Futé flags pressure on routes including the A1, A2, A25, A28, A10 and the N165 at different afternoon and evening periods. A route that looks shorter may not be faster if it joins these peaks.
A practical departure plan
Fuel or charge the vehicle before joining a congested corridor, download an offline map and keep water, medication and warm layers accessible. Check the live road authority feed shortly before departure because an accident or weather event can change the best route. If traveling with children, schedule a safe break rather than trying to recover lost time by speeding.
For airport and train connections
Do not use the normal drive time to calculate an airport or station arrival. Add a separate congestion margin, reserve parking if needed and confirm terminal access. Travelers crossing Paris should also check rail alternatives. A missed flight caused by road congestion is generally not treated like an airline cancellation.
