After the Fires: Can France Save Its Summer Tourism Season?

After wildfires, Gironde and Nouvelle-Aquitaine work to rebuild visitor confidence and protect the 2026 summer season.

When flames swept through parts of Gironde, the next test became restoring visitor confidence without minimising risk.

Recovery is a tourism challenge

Le Monde reported a €200,000 Nouvelle-Aquitaine campaign launched on 5 August 2026 for visitors from Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium and Spain. Tourism businesses often earn 70–80% of annual revenue in July and August.

Travel responsibly

Impacts are local and conditions change. Check prefecture notices, respect closures and keep flexible plans. Advance transfers between Bordeaux and the coast can reduce disruption.
