Disneyland Paris began as a wager: could an international resort create a new economic centre east of Paris?
The 1987 decision
France and The Walt Disney Company signed the agreement creating Euro Disneyland in 1987. Since opening in 1992, the resort says it has recorded more than 445 million visits and contributed billions of euros to the French economy.
Why the ecosystem matters
The resort combines parks, seven Disney hotels, restaurants, retail and events. RER, TGV at Marne-la-Vallée–Chessy and the A4 motorway connect visitors and employees, while Val d’Europe has grown into a wider residential and business district.
The next test
New attractions can generate headlines, but trained staff, transport capacity and sustainable water and energy use determine whether growth remains welcome. The resort’s influence is measured not only in admissions, but in hotel nights, supplier contracts and regional jobs.
