France’s Best Cancer Hospitals in the 2027 Global Oncology Ranking

Gustave Roussy ranks third worldwide. A verified guide to France’s leading cancer hospitals and how patients should interpret the 2027 ranking.

SPECIAL REPORT · HEALTH & INTERNATIONAL MOBILITY · 28 SEPTEMBER 2026

France has reached the global oncology podium. Newsweek and Statista’s World’s Best Specialized Hospitals 2027 ranking places Gustave Roussy in Villejuif third worldwide—the highest-ranked cancer centre in France and Europe. The ranking is significant, but it is not a substitute for tumour-specific medical judgment.

At a glance: Gustave Roussy leads the French and European field. Institut Curie, Centre Léon Bérard, Pitié-Salpêtrière, Institut Paoli-Calmettes and Hôpital européen Georges-Pompidou are also among France’s highest-ranked oncology institutions.

Why the global top-three position matters

Gustave Roussy ranks behind Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York and MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. The Institute says it treated more than 54,000 patients in 2025, including 2,800 children and adolescents. Its model puts clinical care, research and education in one ecosystem. For patients, however, the useful question is not prestige alone: does the centre have a team with deep experience in the exact tumour type and stage?

A three-place rise in one year

The two editions show a notable change: Gustave Roussy ranked sixth worldwide in 2026 and moved to third in 2027. This shift alone does not prove improved clinical outcomes, because professional recommendations carry substantial weight in the methodology. It does, however, signal stronger international visibility and sustained leadership in Europe.

How Newsweek and Statista built the ranking

Statista says more than 8,500 hospitals were evaluated for the 2027 edition, with 734 individual hospitals awarded across 35 countries and 13 specialties. In oncology, the assessment is driven primarily by international peer recommendations, with additional consideration for accreditations and certifications and the implementation of patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs).

This makes the list a useful reputation and institutional-quality signal. It does not compare every clinical outcome for every cancer type. The methodology itself warns that the ranking is time-bound and should not be the sole basis for healthcare decisions.

What distinguishes the leading French centres?

Gustave Roussy: France and Europe’s highest-ranked centre

Located just south of Paris in Villejuif, Gustave Roussy treats adult and childhood cancers, including rare and complex disease. It is known for early-phase research and precision-oncology programmes. International patients should first ask whether the relevant team can review their records and pathology.

Institut Curie: science embedded in care

Across Paris, Saint-Cloud and Orsay, Institut Curie combines a hospital group with a research centre. Its recognised fields include radiotherapy, proton therapy, precision medicine and selected rare tumours. The most appropriate site and team depend on the diagnosis.

Centre Léon Bérard: Lyon’s comprehensive cancer hub

This dedicated cancer centre brings diagnosis, treatment, supportive care and clinical research together in Lyon, showing that France’s specialist expertise extends well beyond Paris.

Pitié-Salpêtrière: a major multi-specialty academic hospital

Its integrated oncology site coordinates medical oncology, haematology, radiotherapy, nuclear medicine, surgery and research. The hospital reports about 7,000 new oncology patients a year and may be particularly relevant where cancer care intersects with other complex specialties.

Institut Paoli-Calmettes: Marseille in France’s top tier

IPC is 67th worldwide and fifth in France. It is a non-profit cancer centre in the Unicancer network, combining treatment, research and clinical trials in southern France.

Georges-Pompidou: rapid diagnosis and multidisciplinary care

HEGP offers oncology pathways from prevention to treatment, selected rapid-diagnosis centres and early-phase therapeutic research within the AP-HP system.

Why France performs strongly in oncology

France combines public university hospitals with a distinctive network of dedicated cancer centres, the Centres de lutte contre le cancer (CLCC). These are private non-profit institutions carrying out a public-service mission. Unicancer brings together 18 CLCCs and two affiliated members across 22 sites, supporting concentrated expertise, clinical research and comprehensive care.

How to choose a cancer centre in France

  • Start with the tumour, not the league table: cancer type, stage, molecular profile, age and previous treatment.
  • Check exact expertise: similar case volume, multidisciplinary review and access to the necessary technology.
  • Prepare a reviewable file: pathology report and slides or digital files, imaging, blood tests, prior treatment and medication list.
  • Ask what is genuinely available: standard care, trial options, eligibility and waiting time.
  • Clarify cost and coverage: a high ranking does not mean free care for international patients.
  • Plan continuity: interpretation, discharge documentation and coordination with the home oncologist.
