Riyadh Airport Closure Extended to October 17: What Travelers Should Do Now

Riyadh’s King Khalid International Airport is expected to remain closed until 21:00 GMT on October 17. Here is how to check flights, connections and rebooking options.

Saudi aviation alert · Updated 15 October 2026

The closure of King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh has been extended until 21:00 GMT on Saturday, 17 October—midnight at the start of 18 October in Riyadh. A published reopening time is not a guarantee that every flight will resume immediately: safety inspections, operational readiness and each airline’s own schedule will determine what happens next.

What has been confirmed

Anadolu Agency reported, citing Saudi Arabia’s civil aviation authority, that the suspension was extended so the airport could complete safety checks and confirm operational readiness. Airlines have separately cancelled, suspended or adjusted services involving Riyadh. Because airline decisions do not all cover the same dates, a general reopening notice cannot confirm an individual booking.

Do not travel to the airport on the basis of the timetable alone

A flight can still appear in an old itinerary, an email or a third-party booking screen after an airline has changed its operating plan. Open the airline’s own app or website, enter the flight number and date, and check the departure airport as well as Riyadh. If the ticket was issued by a travel agent or another airline, identify the operating carrier before contacting support.

Connections require two separate checks

For an itinerary such as Paris–Riyadh–Asia, Cairo–Riyadh–Europe or Jeddah–Riyadh–an international destination, verify every flight segment. A long-haul sector may be cancelled while a domestic alternative remains available, or the reverse. Do not assume baggage will be transferred to a newly proposed route until the airline confirms it in writing.

Rebooking, refunds and expenses

Use the carrier’s disruption page or manage-booking tool first; call centres may be heavily loaded. Ask whether the airline is offering a date change, rerouting through another airport, a travel credit or a refund for the unused journey. The correct remedy depends on the ticket, operating airline, route and applicable law. Keep cancellation messages, boarding documents and reasonable-expense receipts. Do not buy an expensive replacement before establishing what the original carrier will provide.

Could Jeddah or Dammam be an alternative?

Other Saudi airports may continue operating, but they are not automatic substitutes for Riyadh. A change of airport creates a separate ground journey, baggage problem and possible visa or connection issue. Accept an alternative only after the airline confirms the complete itinerary and after checking safe, realistic ground transport.

What to monitor through the weekend

Watch three sources: the operating airline, Riyadh Airports and the booking channel that issued the ticket. Keep contact details updated so schedule messages reach you. If travel is not essential, consider whether a confirmed later departure is more reliable than attempting to reach the airport during an evolving operation.

Quick answers

Should I go to RUH if the flight still appears scheduled?

Only after the operating airline confirms that the flight will operate and provides check-in instructions.

Does the stated reopening time mean normal operations immediately?

No. A reopening can be phased, and individual airline schedules may remain suspended.

Should I reroute myself through another Saudi airport?

Not before the airline confirms the new ticket, baggage handling and the full onward connection.

What to do now

Share this alert with anyone booked to fly to, from or through Riyadh before the weekend. The useful action is to verify the operating flight—not merely the original reservation.
